Who We Are

Tartan Tours began in September 1993 as the fulfillment of a dream that David and Carol Steele had for many years to have their own business. Since both David and Carol relate well to people and enjoy travel the tour industry was a natural type of business for them to enter. Beginning in 1993 they have developed a well-respected name in the community, with both customers and other tour operators.

The Scottish flavour is from both David and Carol's family. David was born in Forfar, Scotland, immigrated to Canada at the age of eleven and went to secondary school and college in Toronto. He had a wonderful career in the Canadian Merchant Navy and later worked in the automotive industry. Carol's father was born in Tilicoultry, Scotland and immigrated to Canada at the age of three. Carol was born in London, Ontario but moved to Windsor where she attended both elementary and secondary school. Carol eventually graduated from London Teachers College and had a enjoyable career as an elementary teacher and teaching consultant. Both David and Carol are very active in church and cultural organizations in the city of Barrie.

In 1993 David and Carol began Tartan Tours, working from our home in the south end of Barrie. In August 1999 we moved into our new office at 81 Toronto Street where our business expanded from just Day Tours to Multi Day tours as well. We did many theatre tours to Toronto with almost 5 years of tours to Mamma Mia. Trips further away took us to Newfoundland, The Maritimes, Bermuda and Scotland. Then in September 2004 we made the decision to move to 34 Ross Street. We added the option of independent travel arrangements to our customers as well as continuing to plan and direct Day and Multi Day Tours. We were beginning to find the work load too much and made the decision to end Tartan Tours. A company called Hanover Holidays, that we had worked with over the years, offered us the opportunity to continue planning and directing tours in the Simcoe County area but we would become a division of Hanover Holidays. Here we are in 2010, still offering quality Day and Multi Day Tours for our wonderful and very loyal customers under our new name Tartan Tours a division of Hanover Holidays.
